Alsace and Black Forest with kids

It seems like it was in another life that I had a blog and an audience to whom I told about my travels and obsessions. I don't even know if the blog scene is dead or what, but the truth is that I still love being able to easily have memories of the past at hand. It's like having albums always at hand. In recent years things have changed and so have my trips... now most are focused on family trips with children 😉. So, I premiere the “with kids” section with this post from our last trip.

Parece que fue en otra vida que tenía un blog y una audiencia a la que le contaba mis viajes y obsesiones. Ni siquiera sé si el panorama blog a muerto o que, pero la verdad es que me sigue encantando poder tener fácilmente a mano los recuerdos del pasado. Es como tener álbumes siempre a mano.  En estos últimos años las cosas han cambiado y mis viajes también… ahora la mayoría están enfocados a viajes en familia con niños . Así que, estreno sección “with kids” con este post de nuestro último viaje.

We travel 12 days, dedicating 2 days to the outward journey and two days to the return trip, because we drove by car from Barcelona and stopped one night on the way there and another on the way back. Both times we stopped near Lyon because it is halfway between Barcelona and the Black Forest. Both accommodations were campsites where we rented a bungalow. Both places are totally recommended, very affordable and perfect for kids. We traveled from end June to the beginning of July. A very good time because in Germany the children are still at school and everything wasn't crowded neither hot. We stayed in the Black Forest for a week and stayed 7 days in the same apartment. From there we made daily excursions to places that were usually about an hour from our apartment. This is the route we did:

Fueron 12 días dedicando 2 días al viaje de ida y dos días al de vuelta, porque fuimos en coche desde Barcelona y paramos una noche a la ida y otra a la vuelta. Las dos veces paramos cerca de Lyon porque está a medio camino entre Barcelona y la Selva Negra. Ambos alojamientos eran campings donde alquilamos un bungalow. Los dos sitios son totalmente recomendables, muy económicos y super chulos, a los niños les encantó. Fuimos de finales de junio a principios de julio. Una muy buena época porque en Alemania los niños aún no tenían vacaciones y no estaba todo masificado ni hacía calor. En la Selva Negra nos quedamos una semana y nos alojamos los 7 días en el mismo apartamento. Desde ahí hacíamos excursiones diarias a sitios que solían estar a una hora aproximadamente de nuestro apartamento. Esta es la ruta que hicimos:

Trevoux was a big surprise. After a long trip, and many traffic jams, we arrived at night and very tired at the Kanopée Village campsite. A beautiful place next to the Saona River and a few meters from the center of this picturesque town. We booked simply because it was located halfway along the route and it was a very positive surprise. The town is full of ateliers and has fantastic views over the river. The next day we drove to Strasbourg, where we stayed in a beautiful campsite in the center of the city, 30' walk from the historic center. This campsite is also 100% recommended, super nice, with a swimming pool and games area, restaurant and all kinds of accommodation at affordable and very cool prices. We rented a tent with a kitchen and 2 rooms that the children loved because it overlooked a stream where there were otters!

Trevoux fue la gran sorpresa. Tras un viaje largo, porque cogimos muchas retenciones, llegamos de noche y super cansados al camping Kanopée Village. Un sitio precioso junto al río Saona y a escasos metros del centro de este pintoresco pueblo. Reservamos simplemente porque estaba situado a medio camino de la ruta y fue toda una sorpresa. El pueblo está lleno de ateliers y tiene unas vistas sobre el rio fantásticas. Al día siguiente salimos para Estrasburgo, donde nos alojamos en un camping precioso en el centro de la ciudad, a 30’ caminando del centro histórico. Un camping también 100% recomendable, super bonito, con piscina y zona de juegos, restaurante y todo tipo de alojamientos de precios económicos y muy chulos. Nosotros alquilamos una tienda con cocina y 2 habitaciones que a los niños les encantó porque daba a un riachuelo donde había nutrias!

We spent the next day strolling Strasbourg. We loved Strasbourg with its beautiful canals, its picturesque streets and its beautiful cathedral. We went up to the cathedral tower which has incredible views and the children really liked it. We were also about to get on the tourist train, but in the end we were a little late and we preferred to rest at the camping pool. We slept in Strasbourg and the next day we went to the Black Forest. On the way to our accommodation in Ober Wolfach, we passed through Gengenbach, which almost everyone describes as the most beautiful village in the Black Forest. I don't know if it's because we arrived at lunchtime, hungry and very hot, but it didn't seem that wonderful to us. Yes, it is a beautiful town, but it didn't surprise us that much.

 

El día siguiente lo dedicamos a recorrer Estrasburgo. Estrasburgo nos encantó! Con sus preciosos canales, sus pintorescas calles y su preciosa catedral. Subimos a la torre de la catedral que tiene unas vistas increíbles y a los niños les gustó mucho. También estuvimos a punto de subir al tren turístico, pero al final se nos hizo un poco tarde y preferimos descansar en la piscina del camping. Dormimos en Estrasburgo y al día siguiente nos fuimos a la Selva Negra. De camino a nuestro alojamiento en Ober Wolfach, pasamos por Gengenbach, que casi todo el mundo describe como el pueblo más bonito de la Selva Negra. No sé si es porque llegamos a la hora de comer, con hambre y con mucho calor, pero no nos pareció tan maravilloso. Si que es un pueblo bonito, pero no nos sorprendió tanto.

From there we went to what would be our apartment for the next few days in the Black Forest. A wonderful apartment on a farm high in the mountains, surrounded by nature and with a swimming pool in the middle of fir trees. The truth is that it is a little more isolated than we imagined (the closest supermarket was 20 minutes away by car) but after getting used to the idea, we discovered how wonderful the place is. The kids loved it. It had a sandbox with toys, a swing and slide, chickens, rabbits, cows, a pool with spring water and a toy tractor that amazed them! 😃 The apartment was super good, very good price and the owners were wonderful. TOTALLY RECOMMENDED! We threw the organic waste into a bucket of chicken food and my children couldn't be happier when every night we went down to throw away the organic waste. The only downside is that they don't have Wi-Fi... but hey, nowadays with Roaming it's not much of a problem either. The closest town is Wolfach, which is small but very cute.

 

De ahí nos fuimos al que sería nuestro apartamento durante los siguientes días en la Selva Negra. Un apartamento maravilloso en una granja en lo alto de la montaña, en plena naturaleza y con una piscina en medio de abetos. La verdad es que está algo más aislada de lo que nos imaginábamos (el super más cercano estaba a 20´ en coche) pero después de hacernos a la idea, descubrimos lo maravilloso del sitio. A los niños les encantó. Tenía un arenal con juguetes, un columpio y tobogán, gallinas, conejos, vacas, una piscina con agua de manantial y un tractor de juguete que les flipó!  El apartamento estaba super bien, muy buen precio y los propietarios eran majísimos. TOTALMENTE RECOMENDABLE! Los deshechos de orgánico los tirábamos a un cubo de comida de las gallinas y mis hijos no podían estar más contentos cuando cada noche bajábamos a tirar el orgánico. La única pega, es que no tienen wifi… pero bueno, hoy en día con el Roaming tampoco es mucho problema. El pueblo más cercano es Wolfach, que es pequeñito pero muy cuco.

The next day we did our first excursion, we visited Triberg and its famous waterfalls. We parked near one of the entrances. The entrance costs €2 and gives access to a natural park where you can take different walking routes and see the waterfalls. At the end of the route there is a nice playground and from there you can walk to the town. It is very touristy and is full of souvenir shops and cuckoo clocks, which are famous in this town. It is also typical here to eat the famous Black Forest cake (but come on, they sell it everywhere!). We really enjoyed it.

 

Al día siguiente hicimos nuestra primera excursión, visitamos Triberg y sus famosas cascadas. Aparcamos cerca de uno de los accesos. La entrada cuesta 2€ y da acceso a un parque natural donde puedes realizar diferentes rutas a pie y ver las cascadas. Al final de la ruta hay una parque infantil que no está mal y de ahí ya puedes ir al pueblo andando. Es muy turístico y está lleno de tiendas de souvenirs y de relojes de Cuco, que son famosos en este pueblo. Aquí también es típico comerse la famosa tarta de la Selva Negra (pero vamos, que la venden en todos lados!). Lo pasamos muy bien.

The next morning we did the excursions that we were most excited about because it was a great plan for the kids. It didn't turn out to be a very good day... in fact it was the only day it rained during the entire vacation, but the truth is that it was one of the best days of the trip. We went to Bad Wildbad, to its “Summer Forest”, Sommerberg. Sommerberg is one of the essential places in Bad Wildbad, dedicated to enjoying the forest, with different attractions and areas for the whole family:

• The walk through the treetops: it is a walk of just over a kilometer with a maximum height of 20m above the ground, which gives the feeling that you are taking a walk through the treetops. This path has different points where you can stop to learn about the fauna and flora of the area and also activities for the little ones.
• Baumwipfelpfad: at the end of the path is the 40-meter-high viewing tower. It is a circular structure that imitates the shape of a honeycomb. In fact, it is very reminiscent of The Vessel building in New York. Once at the top, we have 360º views of the classic Black Forest landscape: a blanket of trees that cover absolutely everything, a marvel. Right in the center of the structure, there is a 55m slide that takes you straight down. As it had been drizzling all day, this slide was closed and we couldn't enjoy it.
• The suspension bridge (Hangerbrücke): another of the activities that Sommerberg offers is the suspension bridge. 380 meters long and 60 meters above the ground. The views must be spectacular, but we didn't go up. In the end, each attraction has a price (which is not especially cheap), and we discarded this.
• The children's adventure park (Abenteuerwald): a children's playground taken to the next level and fully integrated into the nature of the Black Forest. It's a real blast and the little ones really enjoy it.

A la mañana siguiente teníamos planeada una de las excursiones que más ilusión nos hacía porque era un planazo para los bichis. No salió muy buen día… de hecho fue el único día que nos llovió en todas las vacaciones, pero bueno, nos arriesgamos y la verdad es que fue uno de los mejores días del viaje. Fuimos a Bad Wildbad, a su “Bosque de verano”, Sommerberg. Sommerberg es uno de los lugares imprescindibles de Bad Wildbad, dedicado al disfrute del bosque, con diferentes atracciones y espacios para toda la familia:

• El paseo por las copas de los árboles: se trata de un paseo de algo más de un quilómetro con una altura máxima de 20m sobre el suelo, que da la sensación de que estás dando un paseo por las copas de los árboles. Este camino tiene diferentes puntos en los que pararse a aprender de la fauna y flora de la zona y también actividades para los más pequeños.
• Baumwipfelpfad: al finalizar el camino está la torre mirador de 40 metros de altura. Es una estructura circular que imita la forma de un panal de abejas. De hecho, recuerda mucho al edificio The Vessel, en Nueva York. Una vez arriba, tenemos vistas 360º del clásico paisaje de la Selva Negra: un manto de árboles que lo cubren absolutamente todo, una maravilla. Justo en el centro de la estructura, hay un tobogán de 55m que te lleva directo abajo. Como había estado lloviznando todo el día, este tobogán estaba cerrado y no pudimos disfrutarlo.
• El puente colgante (Hangerbrücke): otra de las actividades que ofrece Sommerberg es el puente colgante. 380 metros de largo y a 60 metros sobre el suelo. Las vistas deben ser espectaculares, pero nosotros no subimos. Al final cada atracción tiene un precio (que no es especialmente barato), y este lo descartamos.
• El parque de aventuras infantil (Abenteuerwald): un parque infantil llevado al siguiente nivel e integrado totalmente en la naturaleza de la Selva Negra. Es una auténtica pasada y los más pequeños lo disfrutan un montón.

Our next trip was to Freiburg. Before arriving we had already read that it is practically impossible to park for free, and the entire historic center is pedestrian. We went directly to the parking lot of the Parkhaus Karlsbau shopping center, which has an exit to Herrenstrasse, a 2-minute walk from the cathedral. It cost us €11 and we stayed for about 6 hours. Freiburg is a beautiful city. We dedicated ourselves to walking through its streets calmly. We ate at Café Einstein, in a more local and less touristy area. The staff was very friendly, the food was very delicious and very well priced. Highly recommended!

 

Nuestra siguiente excursión fue Friburgo. Antes de llegar ya habíamos leído que es prácticamente imposible aparcar de forma gratuita, además todo el centro histórico es peatonal. Nosotros fuimos directamente al aparcamiento del centro comercial Parkhaus Karlsbau, que tiene salida a Herrenstrasse, a 2 minutos a pie de la catedral. Nos costó 11€ y estuvimos unas 6h. Friburgo es una ciudad preciosa. Nos dedicamos a pasear por sus calles tranquilamente. Comimos en el Café Einstein, un zona más local y menos turística. El personal fue simpatiquísimo, la comida muy rica y muy bien de precio. Muy recomendable!

On Sunday we chose a quiet plan so that the kids could rest a little and be able to enjoy the apartment's pool and play area in the afternoon, which drove them crazy! We went to Gutach, which was super close to our accommodation. Here is a fantastic museum to visit with children, the Schwarzwälder Freilichtmuseum Vogtsbauernhof, an open-air space museum that explores the cultural heritage and development of rural areas of the Black Forest. There are original houses and others reconstructed, craftsmen in the patios showing the public how the work was carried out in a traditional way and also specific events that you can consult on their website. The truth is that it is the best place to get an idea of how this region worked before industrialization. Our visit coincided with the inauguration of a new house within the museum. There was live music, they gave local wine to toast, there were local food stalls and many neighbors went to spend the day there. It was a great day. I recommend that you bring a picnic and dedicate a whole day to it if you go with children. It is a super nice place, there are several very cool playgrounds inside (there is one to play with water) and there are also restaurants and cafes. A few steps from the museum there is another essential activity for the little ones, the “Sommerrodelbahn”, a summer sleigh that goes down the mountain at high speed. A blast for the little ones (and not so little ones). The venue has a whole infrastructure around it with a bar, picnic area, playground and even some coin-operated attractions that include several cranes and excavators that will make you have a super fun time. Near the museum there is also a very good place to eat: Webers Esszeit - Christian Weber

 

El domingo escogimos un plan tranquilo para que los bichis pudieran descansar un poco y poder disfrutar por la tarde de la piscina y la zona de juegos del apartamento, que les volvía locos! Fuimos a Gutach, que estaba super cerca de nuestro alojamiento. Aquí hay un museo fantástico para ir con niños, el Schwarzwälder Freilichtmuseum Vogtsbauernhof, un espacio al aire libre que explora la herencia cultural y el desarrollo de las áreas rurales de la Selva Negra. Hay casas originales y otras reconstruidas, artesanos en los patios mostrando al público cómo se desarrollaban los trabajos de forma tradicional y también eventos puntuales que puedes consultar en su página web. La verdad es que es el mejor lugar para hacerte una idea de cómo funcionaba esta región antes de la industrialización. Nuestra visita coincidió con la inauguración de una nueva casa dentro del museo. Había música en directo, daban vino local para brindar, había puestos de comida local y muchos vecinos fueron a pasar el día allí. Fue un día genial. Os recomiendo que llevéis picnic y le dediquéis todo un día si vais con niños. Es un sitio super agradable, hay varios parques muy chulos dentro para niños (hay uno para jugar con agua) y también hay restaurantes y cafeterías. A escasos pasos del museo hay otra actividad imprescindible para los peques, el “Sommerrodelbahn”, un trineo de verano que baja a gran velocidad por la montaña. Una pasada para los peques (y no tan peques).  El recinto tiene toda una infraestructura alrededor con bar, zona de picnic, parque infantil e incluso unas atracciones que van con monedas que incluyen varias grúas y excavadoras que harán que paséis un rato super divertido. Cerca del museo también hay un sitio que está muy bien para comer: Webers Esszeit - Christian Weber

On Monday we visited Schiltach, a small town but one of our favorite one! At the risk of criticism, I have to say that we liked it more than Gengenbach. Here we basically recommend strolling through its historic center, which is very beautiful. The next day, our last day in the Black Forest, we visited Calw and Freudenstadt. We also love Calw very much. It has the essence of the small towns in the area, but it is a little more of a city, with a shopping street and parks for children. We parked at Parkhaus Calw in the center and cheap. We stayed for about 4 hours and it cost us €3.5. From here we went to Freudenstadt, characterized by having the largest market square in Germany. Here there is a playground that will delight the little ones and that also has an area to play with water and sand.

 

El lunes visitamos Schiltach, un pueblo pequeñito pero que nos encantó! A riesgo de recibir críticas, he de decir que nos gustó más que Gengenbach. Aquí básicamente os recomendamos callejear por su centro histórico que es muy bonito. Al día siguiente, nuestro último día en la Selva Negra, visitamos Calw y Freudenstadt. Calw nos encantó. Tiene la esencia de los pueblitos de la zona, pero es un poco más ciudad, con calle comercial y parques para niños. Aparcamos en Parkhaus Calw en el centro y económico. Estuvimos unas 4 horas y nos costó 3,5€. De aquí nos fuimos a Freudenstadt, caracterizada por tener la plaza de mercado más grande Alemania. Aquí hay un parque infantil que hará las delicias de los más peques y que también tiene una zona para jugar con agua y arena.

In the morning we sadly left our apartment and began our route to Barcelona. We arrived in Colmar, where we would spend one night. We left the car in the parking lot of the hostel where we were staying and went to discover the city. The hostel is a 15' walk from the center and is simple, but clean, pleasant and comfortable. We booked a family room and the four of us were comfortable. Colmar is a super picturesque place, it almost looks like the decoration of an amusement park. You'll be amazed by all its streets, its incredibly decorated and cared for facades, its canals... it's a town straight out of a Disney story. There was a lot of tourism, but we enjoyed it a lot. The next morning we went to Lyon and slept at a highly recommended campsite in Vernioz, Camping Le Bontemps, in a beautiful bungalow for a super affordable price. The campsite has a swimming pool with several slides that will delight the little ones. And from here we went to Barcelona with very good memories of this trip that our kids loved!

 

Por la mañana dejamos con pena nuestro apartamento y empezamos nuestra ruta hacia Barcelona. Llegamos a Colmar, donde pasaríamos una noche. Dejamos el coche en el parking del albergue donde nos alojábamos y fuimos a descubrir la ciudad. El albergue está a 15’ andando del centro y es sencillo, pero está limpio, es agradable y cómodo. Reservamos una habitación familiar y estuvimos los 4 a gusto. Colmar es un sitio super pintoresco, parece casi la decoración de un parque de atracciones. Alucinas con todas sus calles, sus fachadas increíblemente decoradas y cuidadas, sus canales… es un pueblo sacado de un cuento de Disney. Había mucho turismo, pero lo disfrutamos mucho. A la mañana siguiente nos fuimos hacia Lyon y dormimos en un camping super recomendable en Vernioz, Camping Le Bontemps, en un bungalow precioso por un precio super económico. El camping tiene piscina con varios toboganes que hará las delicias de los más peques. Y de aquí ya nos fuimos a Barcelona con muy buenos recuerdos de este viaje que a los bichis les encantó!
