Route 61: road trip

In Nola we started our Road Trip through Highway 61 to Nashville. Today I will explain you the route to Clarskdale through Natchez, Vicksburg, Jackson, Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Tupelo and Oxford. Staying in roadside motels without reservation. Keep reading!

En Nola empezábamos el Road Trip que nos llevaría hasta Nashville. Hoy os contaré toda nuestra ruta hasta Clarskdale pasando por Natchez, Vicksburg, Jackson, Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Tupelo y Oxford. Alojándonos en moteles de carretera sin reserva previa. Os lo cuento!

Our first stop was in Natchez, the oldest city on the Mississippi (even older than New Orleans). We arrived in the afternoon and walked around downtown. It's nice, but it looked like a ghost town. It was 6pm, there was no one and all the shops were closed (which we found to be very common throughout this area). We slept at the Red Carpet Inn motel ($56/night in a double room with bathroom, wifi and breakfast), cheap, dirty, but very authentic. The next day we visited some of the incriebles Antebellum mansions (Scarlett O'Hara mood all the time). Natchez has the largest number of Antebellum houses across the United States, and most are open to the public. We also liked the walk along the river down to Natchez "Under the Hill, origin of the current Natchez. I recommend having dinner or a beer at Bowie's Tavern's terrace with overview to the Mississippi.

Nuestra primera parada fue Natchez, el poblado más antiguo del río Misisipi (más antiguo incluso que Nueva Orleans). Llegamos por la tarde y dimos una vuelta por el centro de pueblo. Nos gustó, pero parecía un pueblo fantasma. Eran las 18h y no había nadie y todas las tiendas estaban cerradas (algo que hemos comprobado que es muy común en toda esta zona). Dormimos en el motel Red Carpet Inn (56$ la noche en habitación doble, con baño, wifi y desayuno), barato, algo sucio, pero muy auténtico. Al día siguiente visitamos algunas de sus incriebles casas Antebellum (muy Scarlett O'Hara).  Natchez cuenta con el mayor número de casas anteriores a la Guerra de Independencia de todo Estados Unidos, y la mayoría están abiertas al público. También nos gustó mucho el paseo por el río que baja hasta Natchez "Under the Hill, origen del actual Natchez. Os recomiendo cenar o tomaros una birra en la terraza de Bowie's Tavern admirando el Misisipi.

From Natchez we went to Jackson stopping in Vicksburg for having lunch. The truth is that Vicksburg is worth for that, for making a stop along the way and enjoy the powerful and caloric southern food. We ate at KJ's River Town Grille a delicious burger and a Po 'Boy. From here we continued towards Jackson, just because of Johnny Cash's song. And it seems that he wasn't referring to this Jackson, but to the one inTennesse. Jackson has nothing and is completely dispensable. But we slept in one of the best roadside motels of our trip (I guess we were influenced by the contrast with the one in Natchez), Baymont Motel ($ 69 per night, double room with bathroom, wifi and breakfast).

De Natchez fuimos a Jackson parando a comer en Vicksburg. La verdad es que Vicksburg es interesante para eso, para hacer un alto en el camino y disfrutar de la potente y calórica comida sureña. Comimos en KJ's River Town Grille una deliciosa hamburguesa y un Po' Boy. De aquí seguimos hacia Jackson, porque nos hacia gracia por la canción de Johnny Cash. Y parece ser que ni eso, que se cree que se refería al Jackson de Tennesse y no a éste, Misisipi. Jackson no tiene nada y es totalmente prescindible. Eso sí, dormimos en uno de los mejores moteles de carretera de nuestro viaje (supongo que influenciados por el contraste con el anterior, nos encantó), Baymont Motel (69$ la noche en habitación doble, con baño, wifi y desayuno).

Here we made a small detour on our route to go to Alabama (photos on the border included!) We visited Tuscaloosa, important for its University and, perhaps, the only significance of this city. Here I bought my shirt of Alabama University (something I had in mind since the beginning of the trip!) There is a great student atmosphere in this city (and this is all the city has to offer). From here we went to Birmingham, the largest city of the state. Here you can stroll around the center and then go to dinner or drink to Five Points South,a trendy neighborhood full of students. We stayed in a centrally located motel, Tourway Inn ($65/night without breakfast, just coffee). We ate breakfast at Urban Standard. Delicious and rich rich coffee! (Not that easy to find in here). 

Aquí hicimos un pequeño inciso en nuestra ruta porque queríamos ir a Alabama (fotos en la señal fronteriza incluidas!) Visitamos Tuscalusa, importante por su Universidad y, tal vez, lo único significativo de esta ciudad. Aquí me compré mi camiseta de la Universidad de Alabama (algo que tenía en mente desde que planteamos el viaje!) Eso sí, se ve que está ciudad tiene ambiente universitario. De aquí fuimos a Birmingham, la ciudad más grande del estado de Alabama. Aquí podéis pasear por el centro y después ir a cenar o tomar algo al barrio Five Points South, barrio de moda y donde están todos los estudiantes. Nos alojamos en un motel super céntrico, Tourway Inn (65$ sin desayuno, solo café). Desayunamos en Urban Standard. Delicioso y con café rico rico! (Es difícil encontrar buen café por aquí, solo café americano).

After our brief foray into Alabama, we went back to Mississippi and visited Tupelo, Elvis's Birthplace. Here we met Voz, a funny musician and designer with whome Ideotta did a Jam! There wasn't much to see, so we head to Oxford. After seeing all these poor and neglected villages, Oxford dazzles you with its details and how well kept everything is. You quickly realize that there is money in here and that people live well. Expensive cars, well-dressed people, full restaurants, etc. The next thing you notice is that they are all white! Well, you get your conclusions quickly ... Inequality is still huge here in the south. Regardless, the town is nice to visit, specially if you are interested in William Faulkner, who lived here. In fact, you can visit his former home, Rowan Oak, now owned by the university. We do not know if it was because of Friday, but all accommodations where fully booked. So we stayed at 40km, in Batesville, on our way to Clarskdale. We find only a room availible and it was the most expensive of our trip, $88 (with breakfast) in Days Inn.

Tras nuestra breve incursión en Alabama, volvimos a Misisipi y visitamos Tupelo, la ciudad de origen de Elvis. Aquí conocimos a un personaje muy curioso llamado Voz con el que Ideotta improviso una Jam session en la calle. No había mucho que ver y continuamos hacia nuestro siguiente destino: Oxford. Después de ver todos estos pueblos tan pobres y descuidados, llegas a Oxford y la ciudad te deslumbra con sus detalles y lo bien cuidado que está todo. Rápidamente te das cuenta que en este pueblo hay dinero y la gente vive bien. Cochazos, gente bien vestida, locales llenos, etc. Lo siguiente en lo que te fijas es en que todos son blancos! Bien, rápidamente sacas tus conclusiones... La desigualdad sigue siendo enorme aquí, en el sur. Independientemente de eso, el pueblo es agradable de visitar y más si te interesa la literatura y, especialmente, William Faulkner, que vivió aquí. De hecho, puedes visitar su antigua casa, Rowan Oak, ahora propiedad de la universidad. No sabemos si era porque era viernes o qué, pero estaban todos los moteles reservados. Así que nos alojamos a 40km, en Batesville. Aquí también solo encontramos una habitación libre y fue la más cara de nuestro viaje, 88$ (con desayuno) en Days Inn.

The next morning we went to Clarksdale, a small city steeped in blues, specifically the Delta Blues. Musicians such as Ike Turner (rock pioneer) or Sam Cooke (the king of soul) were born here. in Clarksdale, clearly, the majority of the population is African American and  the difference with its neighbor, Oxford,  is abysmal. Everything has that air of abandoned village. We were lucky to arrive on its annual blues festival: Juke Joint Festival. This seemed to encourage all the people to go out and have fun. Live music, street food, local handicrafts, etc. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Is famous the Ground Zero Blues Club, which co-owns the local actor Morgan Freeman and the intersection of 49 with 61, the most famous crossroads in music history. Legend has it that it was here where the musician Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil to master the blues.

A la mañana siguiente fuimos a Clarksdale, una pequeña ciudad impregnada de blues, concretamente Delta Blues. Aquí nacieron músicos como Ike Turner (pionero del rock) o Sam Cooke (el rey del soul). Aquí claramente, la población mayoritaria es la afroamericana y la diferencia con su vecina Oxford es abismal. Todo tiene ese aire de pueblo abandonado. Tuvimos la suerte de coincidir con su festival anual de blues: Juke Joint Festival. Esto parecía animar a todo el pueblo. Conciertos en la calle, puesto de comida, artesanía local, etc. MUY RECOMENDABLE. Es famosos el Ground Zero Blues Club, local del que es copropietario es el actor Morgan Freeman y la intersección de la 49 y 61,  el crossroads más famoso de la historia de la música. Cuenta la leyenda que fue aquí donde el músico Robert Johnson vendió su alma al diablo a cambio de dominar el blues.
