Rotterdam: bohemian way of life

We continue with Rotterdam. While Rotterdam is a city that can be discovered walking aimlessly, without a prior plan, I have some tips for you (tourist and not so tourist) and also some recommendations of unique places for eating and shopping.

Seguimos con Rotterdam. Si bien Rotterdam es una ciudad que se puede descubrir caminando sin un plan previo, ni rumbo fijo, hoy os traigo más información de sitios a visitar (turísticos y no tan turísticos) y también algunas recomendaciones de sitios únicos donde comer y comprar.

Certainly, as I mentioned in my previous post, Witte de Withstraat is one of the most beautiful streets of Rotterdam and worthwhile walking it from end to end. Here you will find endless terraces, thrift shops, lovely restaurants and shops of local designers that you will love!

Sin duda, como ya mencioné en mi anterior post, Witte de Withstraat es una de las calles más bonitas de Róterdam y merece la pena recorrerla de punta a punta. Aquí encontrarás un sinfín de terrazas, tiendas de segunda mano, preciosos restaurantes y tiendas de diseñadores locales que te encantarán.

 

Another essential place in Rotterdam is the market, Markhaal, a multifunctional space bringing together 96 food stalls, more than 20 shops, 8 restaurants, one supermarket, parking lots and 228 housing at the top. The most characteristic feature of this building, apart from its size and shape, is the mural that covers the arc crowning the building. A digital mural of 11,000 square meters and 4,500 pieces of perfectly fitted aluminum, called the Cornucopia, that used Pixar technology in its creation. It reminded me of the Boqueria market in Barcelona, in its futuristic version. Definitely a perfect place to stop by and grab some food to eat inside or outside sitting on the grass. It is hard to resist its delicious smells...

Otro lugar imprescindible en Roterdam es su mercado, Markhaal, un espacio multifuncional que reúne 96 puestos de comida, más de 20 tiendas, 8 restaurantes, 1 supermercado, estacionamientos y 228 viviendas en la parte superior. Lo más característico de este edificio, a parte de su magnitud y forma, es el mural que reviste el arco que corona el edificio. Un mural digital de 11.000 metros cuadrados y 4.500 piezas de aluminio perfectamente encajadas, denominado El cuerno de la abundancia, que ha utilizado tecnología Pixar para su creación. Me recordó al mercado de la Boquería en Barcelona en versión futurista. Sin duda, un lugar perfecto para parar y comer en uno de sus numerosos puestos o fuera sentados en el césped. Es difícil resistirse a sus olores...

In the Netherlands, shops are open also Sundays :) The shopping area is in Lijnbaankwartier and surrounding streets. Here you will find all international clothing brands, although often they are no longer a novelty, but worth for its cheerful atmosphere. I took the opportunity to shop at Monki, one of my favorite stores not yet available in Spain. Walking through the area you also see the cathedral and the town hall.

En Holanda, las tiendas también abren los domingos :) La zona comercial se encuentra en Lijnbaankwartier y calles colindantes. Aquí encontrarás todas las marcas de ropa internacional que, si bien ya no suele ser novedad, merece la pena por su ambiente. Yo aproveché para entrar en Monki, una de mis tiendas favoritas que no ha llegado todavía a España. Caminando por la zona verás también la catedral y el ayuntamiento.

Finally, the station area, where I found most of the treasures! Things I liked: the station itself, the surrounding buildings and the canal. But, the best place by far is the Het Schieblock building. You must definitely go there and be amazed by its high line yellow path, sort of Wizard of Oz walk!

Por último, la zona de la estación, y donde más tesoros encontré! Cosas que me gustaron: la estación, los edificios colindantes y el canal. Pero lo mejor de todo es el edificio Het Schieblock. Tenéis que ir y alucinar con sus paseo elevado amarillo a lo mago de Oz!

Het Schieblock is a jewel emerged from the crisis, the creativity and the principles. Some old abandoned offices occupied for years by different groups that were to be demolished and turned into another car park. An architecture studio with its offices inside, decided to fight for giving a new life to this building and give the power to culture instead of to capitalism (here you can read their manifesto). And so was born, this hub of creativity and urban living laboratory where architects, designers, young artists and cultural institutions live together. The building has spawned several small businesses around that are unique:

Het Schieblock es una joya surgida de la crisis, de la creatividad y de los principios. Unas antiguas oficinas abandonadas ocupadas durante años por diferentes colectivos que iban a ser demolidas y convertidas en otro parking más. Un estudio de arquitectura que tenía ahí sus oficinas, decidió luchar por darle una nueva vida y darle a la cultura el poder frente al capitalismo (aquí podéis leer su manifesto). Así surgió este hub de creatividad y laboratorio urbano donde conviven arquitectos, diseñadores, jóvenes artistas e instituciones culturales y que ha dado lugar a varios pequeños negocios a su alrededor que son únicos:

1. Schieblock Dakcafé, a rooftop restaurant, open Wednesdays 12 pm-3pm with a menu of local, seasonal and sustainable products that changes every week. Outside, there is an urban garden where they cultivate the ingredients they use for cooking.
2. Annabel, concert hall and restaurant where you can taste delicious sandwiches, salads, soups and pizzas.
3. The newly opened Biergarten Rotterdam, the perfect terrace to taste different types of beer and healthy snacks.
4. Nonna & Nene, a small restaurant of Turkish-Italian fusion, with simple but delicious dishes. Do not forget to try their meatballs!
5. Groos,  a concept store displaying fashion, art, music, literature, film and lifestyle products. 'Groos' is an old forgotten Dutch word for 'pride' or 'proud' and that’s why the shop sells only local products. Supporting their local creatives with this concept, tends to show that Rotterdam is not just a grey big harbor but a place full of creativity and development.

1. Schieblock Dakcafé, un restaurante en la azotea, abierto los miércoles de 12pm-3pm, con un menú a base de productos locales, de temporada y sostenibles que cambia cada semana. En el exterior, hay un jardín urbano donde cultivan los ingredientes que después utilizan en la cocina. 

2. Annabel, sala de conciertos y restaurante donde podrás saborear deliciosos bocadillos, ensaladas, sopas y pizzas.
3. el recién inaugurado Biergarten Rotterdam, una terraza perfecta para saborear diferentes tipos de cerveza y comida sana.
4. Nonna & Nene, un pequeño restaurante de fusión turco-italiana con unos platos sencillos pero deliciosos. No dejes de probar sus albóndigas!
5. Groos, es una concept store con productos de moda, arte, música, literatura, cine y estilo de vida. En holandés antiguo 'Groos' significa orgullo, y es por ello que en esta tienda solo encontraréis productos de fabricación local. Una forma de apoyar el talento local y demostrar que Róterdam no es solo una ciudad portuaria,  gris e industrial  sino que está llena de creatividad.
