Earth Day

First day of June and I bring you a post from late April... Well, I'm sure many of you didn't even know when is the Earth Day! hahaha I didn't know neither that there was such a day until I met Ideotta and his little box of surprises. There are two events marked on his calendar that we can never miss: Earth Day and Bio-Culture Fair. If you cross him you would never guess that he is interested in this kind of events. You would rather imaging Ideotta at a rock concert than in a green event of this type. But, we will leave aside Ideotta and continue with the post.

Primer día de junio y yo os traigo un post de finales de abril... Pero bueno, seguro que muchos de vosotros tampoco sabéis cuándo se celebra el día de la tierra!!! jajajajaja Yo ni sabía que existía tal día hasta que conocí a Ideotta y su pequeña caja de sorpresas. Hay dos acontecimientos señalados en su agenda que nunca nos podemos perder: el día de la tierra y la feria Bio-Cultura. Si os cruzáis con él, jamás diríais que le puedan interesar esta clase de eventos. A Ideotta te lo esperas más en un concierto de rock que en un evento verde de este tipo. Pero, dejaremos a Ideotta de lado y sigamos con el post.

The earth day is celebrated the 22nd of April, although in Barcelona is always moved to next Sunday. This year was April 27th, coinciding with the birthday of Ideotta! The first demonstration took place April 22, 1970, sponsored by Senator Gaylord Nilson and environmental activist. Nelson chose the date in order to maximize participation on college campuses for what he conceived as an "environmental teach-in". He determined the week of April 19–25 was the best bet as it did not fall during exams or spring breaks. Moreover, it did not conflict with religious holidays, and was late enough in spring to have decent weather. More students were likely to be in class, and there would be less competition with other mid-week events—so he chose Wednesday, April 22. Persistent rumors claim that April 22 was chosen because it is the birthday of Vladimir Lenin, the founder of the Soviet Union. El día de la tierra se celebra el 22 de abril, aunque en Barcelona se traslada siempre al domingo más próximo. Este año el 27 de abril, coincidiendo con el cumple de Ideotta! La primera manifestación tuvo lugar el 22 de abril de 1970, promovida por el senador y activista ambiental Gaylord Nilson. Hay varias teorías sobre la elección de la fecha. La principal es que la fecha fue elegida para maximizar la participación en las universidades. Determinó que la semana del 19 al 25 de abril era la mejor apuesta, ya que esta no coincidía con los exámenes, vacaciones de primavera, ni celebraciones religiosas y el clima podía acompañar. Así se eligió el miércoles 22 de abril, un día entre semana para que la gente fuese nada más salir de trabajar/estudiar y no tuviese otros eventos sociales. Rumores persistentes sostienen que el 22 de abril fue elegido porque es el cumpleaños de Vladimir Lenin, el fundador de la Unión Soviética."El objetivo de Lenin era destruir la propiedad privada, objetivo que también comparten los ambientalistas” publicó en 2004 la web Capitalism Magazine.

The aim of this day is to develop environmental awareness worldwide. This year, Earth Day was focused on green cities, with the aim to mobilize millions of people to achieve a healthy and sustainable environment. Currently, more than half of the world population lives in cities. As the urban population grows, the effects of climate change gets worse and our cities should evolve towards energy efficiency.

El objetivo de este día es el desarrollo de una conciencia medioambiental en todo el mundo. Este año, el Día de la Madre Tierra se centró en las ciudades verdes, con el objetivo de movilizar a millones de personas para lograr un medio ambiente saludable y sostenible. En la actualidad, más de la mitad de la población mundial vive en las ciudades. A medida que la población urbana crece y los efectos del cambio climático empeoran, nuestras ciudades deben evolucionar hacia la eficiencia energética.

This day Barcelona is filled with sustainable trade stalls, animal welfare advocates and environmentally friendly lifestyles defenders. There is food made with organic ingredients and traditional methods, yoga and other disciplines for the balance of mind, body and spirit stands and lots of people enjoying the outdoors.

Este día Barcelona se llena de puestos de comercio sostenible, protectoras de animales y defensores de modos de vida respetuosos con el medio ambiente. Encuentras comida realizada con productos ecológicos y métodos tradicionales, puestos de yoga y demás disciplinas para equilibrar mente, cuerpo y espíritu y un sinfín de gente disfrutando al aire libre.
